Quantum-based microwave power measurements: Proof-of-concept experiment

چکیده
We present an initial proof-of-concept experiment to measure microwave power based on quantum-mechanical principles. Ground-state cesium atoms exposed to microwaves at 9.192 631 770 GHz oscillate between two hyperfine states at a rate that is proportional to the rf magnetic field strength. This provides a quantum-based method of measuring rf field strength that depends only on the fundamental parameters in the proportionality constant. A small fountain apparatus was used to prepare laser-cooled cesium atoms in a single hyperfine state, which were then launched through a cylindrical cavity operating in the TE011 mode. After passing through the cavity, the fraction of atoms in the two hyperfine states was measured. Rabi oscillations between the two states were observed as a function of microwave field strength. The scaling with field strength and with time in the cavity agreed with theory to within 0.4%. The field strength in the cavity was used, together with measured S parameters, to determine the microwave power incident at a reference plane outside the fountain apparatus. The difference between the quantum-based microwave power measurement and a traditional microwave power measurement was less than 5% of the measured power. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1771501]

We present a proof-of-concept experiment to realize microwave primary power standard with a true-twin microcalorimeter. Double feeding line microcalorimeters are widely used by National Metrology Institutes. A drawback concerns the system calibration: traditional processes changes measurement conditions between system characterization and the measurement stage. Nevertheless, if the feeding line...
متن کاملMeasuring the primordial power spectrum: Principal component analysis of the cosmic microwave background
We implement and investigate a method for measuring departures from scaleinvariance, both scale-dependent as well as scale-free, in the primordial power spectrum of density perturbations using cosmic microwave background (CMB) Cl data and a principal component analysis (PCA) technique. The primordial power spectrum is decomposed into a dominant scale-invariant Gaussian adiabatic component plus ...
متن کاملExperimental evidence of selective heating of molecules adsorbed in nanopores under microwave radiation.
We have performed in situ quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements on zeolite-guest systems under microwave irradiation, for comparison with corresponding simulations. Both experiment and simulation reveal selective heating of methanol in silicalite, but little to no heating of benzene in silicalite. Effective translational and rotational temperatures extracted from QENS data under m...
متن کاملEffects of space-time noncommutativity on the angular power spectrum of the CMB
We investigate an inflationary model of the universe based on the assumption that space-time is noncommutative in the very early universe. We analyze the effects of space-time noncommutativity on the quantum fluctuations of an inflaton field and investigate their contributions to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We show that the angular power spectrum l(l + 1)Cl generically has a sharp da...
